I am Christine Thurston, a Marriage and Family Therapist who is passionate about helping people help themselves.Being human is hard and we all need help sometimes. Therapy can make a difference. As a therapist, my approach is accepting, empathetic, and flexible.
Good therapy requires relationships with clients that are built on trust, safety, and respect. I work collaboratively with my clients, supporting them in identifying and bringing about the growth and change that they desire for themselves.
My work with individuals embraces all elements of self-improvement and personal growth. Whether managing ongoing mental health challenges, healing trauma, setting boundaries, or coping with everyday stressors, we tackle it together. Our conversations within therapy sessions aid clients in expanding their understanding of self and empowering them to utilize their hidden resources and strengths. Although I am able to assist with most types of personal challenges, I am particularly interested in helping people suffering from depression and anxiety. I also have specialized experience in serving people facing the unique challenges of acute and chronic illness, especially cancer.
My work with couples almost always centers around improving their communication. Working with me, couples learn how to have difficult conversations that are actually productive and lead to the resolution of problems. They learn to negotiate, heal wounds, and meet each other’s needs better. Usually, this results in increased intimacy and security within the relationship.
I want to extend a sincere and warm welcome to you all. I am an ally! Whether you are an individual or a couple seeking therapy, I will meet you with respect for who you are, what you believe, and how you choose to live. Although a white American woman, I have diverse and unique life experiences, as well as, formal education in multiculturalism and diversity issues. I bring a cultural sensitivity to therapy and I absolutely thrive working with people who have different backgrounds, histories, and cultures than mine. I am LGBTQ+ allied, sex-positive, and kink allied. I do not pathologize or vilify polyamory or CNM relationships. I welcome all religions, including atheism. I support conservative lifestyles and alternative lifestyles equally. Truly, all are welcome, supported, and appreciated here.
For those of you who are interested in the terminology associated with the types of therapy that I provide, my approach to therapy is integrative. I utilize aspects from multiple models of therapy such as Client-Centered Therapy, Systems Theory, Experiential Therapy, Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy, Attachment Theory, Narrative Therapy, The Gottman Institute, CBT, and DBT. I approach all clients/situations through a multicultural framework.
I obtained my master’s degree in Marriage and Family Therapy in 2013 from The University of New Hampshire. Since, I have worked in multiple mental health agencies until I opened my own practice in Washington, in 2020.
