Who am I? Well, that seems to be one of the greatest questions that any of us can ask ourselves. It takes us a lifetime to answer, and at different points along that journey our answer will usually change. Currently, I can tell you that my name is Christine Thurston, I live in the Pacific Northwest with my crazy little family, and that I am a very, very busy Marriage and Family Therapist. I spend my days providing therapy to individuals and couples. I have developed a specialty of working primarily with couples on the cusp of separation and chronically depressed individuals. It’s intense work, yet incredibly rewarding.
I have recently been asked to start a blog and create a social media presence. I will be candid with you new friend; this is not in my wheelhouse. Although I love to write, and I thrive on connecting deeply with people, I am extremely introverted. Putting myself out there for all to see is not a burning desire. However, I sincerely want to reach more people. I absolutely LOVE being a therapist and I consider myself extremely lucky to be passionate about the work that I do. It’s work that I feel good about; helping people help themselves. Providing support and encouragement to folks as they transform themselves, improve their relationships, and live more fulfilling lives is a true honor. I have gained a tremendous amount of experience throughout the years that I am able to share with my clients, but there is a limit to how many individuals that I can meet with during a week. There are so many people who need a little extra support in this life, especially after the past few exceptionally difficult years. So, I have decided to step beyond my office walls in an effort to provide the insights of therapy to more people who need it.
My blog will be about real-life topics that come up in therapy sessions. I’ll talk about questions that clients ask. I’ll write a lot about relationships and couples counseling. My posts will cover general topics in therapy such as depression and anxiety and ways to manage them better. I will also discuss ways to approach therapy and self-improvement in general and I’ll explore subjects such as the importance of follow through, self-care, and integrity. At times, I will probably indulge in philosophical thoughts and questions about finding meaning in life.
I will never pretend to be something that I am not…I can’t be an expert on everything and I will not try to convince you that I have all of the answers. However, I am passionate about self-discovery and deeply interested in all of the myriad ways we can walk the road of personal evolution. You will hear me encourage experimentation with various methods like self-help books, journaling, yoga, meditation, and art. I’ll explore more controversial issues such as medications and alternative methods for treating persistent mental health challenges such as depression, anxiety, or PTSD. Along the road I will always encourage your questioning, research, and experimentation in finding the methods that truly benefit you as a unique individual. Above all, I’m going to do my best to keep it real, meaningful, and useful.
Thank you for joining me…I’m looking forward to this new journey.
